December 31st, 2020 will be Bertine (Bunny) Nixon’s last day serving on the Board of Directors at Great Lakes Credit Union before she enters retirement. While Bunny is no longer a director on the board, she was given the Emeritus Board Member status. This status, the first awarded by the credit union, honors a remarkable long-term and active board member and provides Bunny the opportunity to continue serving GLCU.

“Bunny has been a Director of the credit union for almost 30 years. She has been one of the most supportive Directors and has helped to keep the Board “grounded”, always keeping the member in mind. We are so happy that Bunny will be the inaugural Emeritus member.” -- Stephen Park, Board Chair

When Bunny began volunteering, many local financial institutions did not allow women to take out loans on their own however, GLCU did. This lead Bunny to quickly develop a passion for credit unions and their initiatives.

“I have lived through that revolution all because of credit unions. Working with you, management and the rest of the team has been a great and fulfilling experience.” -- Bunny Nixon

Bunny began serving GLCU while she was the Technical Director in the Military Medical Support Office at the Great Lakes Naval Base, the original location of the credit union and continued her service to GLCU while achieving many professional and personal achievements. For Bunny’s lifelong commitment to the credit union movement, Bunny was awarded the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award into the Illinois Credit Union Hall of Fame.

“Bunny is a remarkable woman of color and the legacy she has developed at Great Lakes Credit Union is simply amazing.  I have enjoyed learning about the history of our credit union and her journey throughout three decades of serving GLCU, where Bunny has always been committed to placing the member-first in our decision making.  She is a testament to the power of having educated and active volunteers in our movement.  In addition, her People Helping People Philosophy is evident and alive in her active support of local charities where she continues to volunteer.  I am thrilled Bunny was selected as our first Emeritus Board Member and I know she will continue to be as active as ever for GLCU and our communities.” - - Steven Bugg, President and CEO
