Is It Really GLCU? How to Spot an Impersonation Scam  image

A call or text claiming to be from your credit union can feel urgent, especially when it concerns your money. But before you respond, pause. Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, impersonating government agencies, major companies and even Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU) to get your money or sensitive information. Knowing what our team will—and will never—ask can help you recognize a scam and respond with confidence. Read on to learn how to spot impersonation scams.

What GLCU Will Never Ask You to Share

Scammers may reach out through phone calls, text messages, or fake social media accounts. Regardless of how someone contacts you, GLCU’s team will never ask for:

  • Your online banking username or password
  • Your debit card PIN
  • A one-time verification code sent to your phone
  • Your Social Security number

If someone claiming to be GLCU asks for any of these details, don’t share them. End the conversation and contact us directly using a trusted number.

Watch for Pressure and Unusual Requests

A demand to act immediately is another warning sign. Our team will never pressure you to take immediate action, tell you to buy gift cards, or ask to remotely control your device. If someone claiming to represent GLCU makes one of these requests, pause rather than follow their instructions.

What to Expect from GLCU’s Fraud Team

GLCU’s fraud team monitors your account and may call if we notice something unusual. When we do, we only ask you to confirm transactions—never to share your security details. If you are unsure whether a call is really from us, you don’t have to stay on the line. Hang up and call us directly.

What to Do if a Message or Call Seems Suspicious

  1. Pause before responding. Don’t let an urgent message pressure you into acting immediately.
  1. Do not click suspicious links. If you receive an urgent, suspicious message claiming to be GLCU, avoid the links in that message.
  1. Hang up if something feels off. Even if a caller seems legitimate, you can end the call if you have doubts.
  1. Contact GLCU directly. Call the number on our official website or the back of your debit card to verify the request.

Your Safety Comes First

Your safety is our highest priority. Remember: we may ask you to confirm a transaction, but we will never ask for your security details. When in doubt, pause, hang up, and contact us directly at (800) 982-7850.
