Watch Out for Bank Jugging image

A growing theft tactic known as bank jugging is putting consumers at risk after they leave a credit union, bank, or ATM with cash. In these situations, criminals watch for people making withdrawals, follow them to their next stop, and look for a chance to steal the money. That is why staying alert and handling cash discreetly is so important.

Bank jugging often happens quickly and quietly. A thief may sit in a parking lot or near an ATM, watching for signs that someone has withdrawn cash.

From there, they may follow the person to a grocery store, gas station, workplace, or even home, waiting for the moment cash is left unattended in a vehicle or carried without much caution. Because the crime can unfold within minutes, it is important to stay aware not just during the withdrawal itself, but also during the trip that follows.

To help protect yourself, conceal your cash before leaving the building or ATM area, stay aware of your surroundings, and watch for suspicious vehicles nearby. If you need to make another stop, do not leave cash in your car, even for a moment. If you think someone may be following you, call 911 right away and go to a safe, public location.

If possible, plan ahead before making a cash withdrawal. Choose a well-lit location, avoid distractions such as texting while walking to your car, and put your money away immediately instead of handling it in public.

It can also help to vary your route and go directly to your destination when carrying cash. If something feels off, trust your instincts, stay in a public place, and contact law enforcement for help rather than heading somewhere isolated.

While many financial transactions happen safely every day, awareness is still one of your best defenses against opportunistic crime.

Taking a few extra moments to conceal cash, scan your surroundings, and protect your next destination can make a meaningful difference. By being proactive and cautious, you can lower your risk and feel more confident whenever you withdraw money.
