FAQs About SBA loans:

Q: What is an SBA loan and how does it work?

A: A Small Business Administration (SBA) loan is a type of loan commonly used for starting, acquiring, or expanding a existing small business. A bank or credit union acts as the lender, and the loan is backed up by the SBA. The SBA does not directly issue the loan, instead acting as an intermediary between the lender and the small business owner to improve accessibility to the loan and to ensure proper guidelines are met to secure funding.

Q: Does Great Lakes Credit Union only offer small business loans in Chicago, IL?

A: GLCU is committed to helping local businesses achieve success, which lifts up our communities. While our branches are located in the Chicagoland area, we do selectively offer financing options for those who are out-of-state.

Q: Does an SBA loan have eligibility requirements?

A: Yes, SBA loans do have eligibility requirements, including factors such as the amount of funds needed, the borrower’s credit history, the intended use of the financing, the size and type of the business, and more. Your Great Lakes Credit Union loan consultant will guide you through the application process.

Q: What disqualifies you from getting an SBA loan?

A: Businesses disqualified from receiving SBA financing are those engaged in loan packaging, multi-sales distribution, investment or lending, speculation, illegal activities or if the owner is on parole. For more information on what types of businesses are ineligible for SBA loans, speak with a Great Lakes Credit Union loan consultant.

Q: How long does the SBA loan process take?
