BANNOCKBURN, Ill. (June 6, 2024) – The GLCU Foundation for Financial Empowerment, in partnership with Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU), is pleased to announce the seven exceptional recipients of its annual Member Scholarship program.

Each student will receive a $2,500 scholarship to further their education at an accredited technical school, trade school, or a four-year college or university. This year, the GLCU Foundation received a record number of applications.

The program exemplifies the credit union's commitment to supporting its members' educational development and financial wellness. By supporting their academic goals, GLCU is investing in the promising futures of its members.

"Their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their communities and studies is admirable, and we look forward to seeing the impact they’ll have moving forward. We’re excited to support them as they embark on the next chapter of their educational and professional journeys."

A reception was held at GLCU headquarters in Bannockburn on June 5 to celebrate the scholarship recipients. GLCU President and CEO, Steve Bugg, Matthew Rizzie, and Patrick Basler, Board Chair for the Foundation and GLCU’s Chief Experience Officer, met the recipients and presented them with their certificates.

The requirements to apply for the scholarship included being a GLCU member; planning to attend or currently attending an accredited post-secondary institution or technical vocational or trade school; and having a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA on a 4.00 scale. Consideration was also given to how involved in their communities the participants were. 

Meet the 2024 GLCU Scholarship Recipients

The 2024 recipients are Zamora Rodriguez Caballero, Veronica Chom, Ava Grace DeNapoli, Lauren D'Souza, Kahla Mitchell, Carrington Newsome, and Margaret Norten. These deserving students were selected based on their outstanding academic achievements, community involvement, and dedication to their future studies.

Zamora Rodriguez Caballero will be attending Purdue University where she plans to major in Nursing.

Veronica Chom will be studying Food and Beverage Entrepreneurship at Johnson and Wales University, Charlotte.

Ava Grace DeNapoli is headed to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio to pursue Nursing.

Lauren D'Souza has chosen Ohio State University for her Biology (Pre-Medicine Track) studies.

Kahla Mitchell will be studying Human Resources at Penn Foster College.

Carrington Newsome is going to attend Southern Illinois University – School of Dental Medicine to study Dentistry.

Lastly, Margaret Norten is set to attend American University, where she will major in Economics, Data Sciences for Political Science.
